I'm trying for the first time to learn how to use template partials
[ ie http://eeinsider.com/articles/templat...]
primarily relying on low variables rather than the stash add-on.
Are there any examples available? Thank you in advance.

   I think Stash is the main add-on to use with the template partials approach. You can use Low Variables as a replacement for Snippets, Global Variables and (to an extent) Embeds. Take a look at the Example Usage articles linked here.
