Are Relationship fields still not natively searchable?
I have a channel of products with a relationship field to authors. When searching for an author name it does not return any products that author is related to.
Are relationship fields still not searchable in that way?

They are not. Let me elaborate a bit as to why.
Making a parent entry searchable by its child's content is a slippery slope. What would be searchable then? Title? Sure. But others would require one ore more of the child's custom fields. And what if one of those fields was also a relationship field? On top of that, as soon as a child entry updates, you'd need to update the index of the parent entry, too.
This makes it far too complex to natively add to LS. Therefore, I opted for a 'category' approach, where you can filter by ID, like you would with categories.
