Saving an unchecked checkbox low variable results in error

I created a single checkbox field as a low variable. If checked, it works ok when I save, but when I uncheck it and try to save I'm getting an error. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

   Can you try and run this query and see if it helps?
   
   

   ALTER TABLE exp_global_variables MODIFY COLUMN variable_data TEXT;
