Limit to parent categories?

britchie 24 Apr 2013 17:57 question, complete

Hi Low,

I'm using Reorder on a project with a number of product categories, some of which have subcategories to two levels. (LR: v 2.1.1, EE v 2.5.5)

When using the "filter entries by category..." option, selecting only the required categories includes the subcategories.

Is there a way to limit LR to the parent categories ONLY so I can use it to output a pull-down menu (for example)?

I'm afraid not. But there's nothing stopping you from just selecting parent categories, of course.

Not sure what you mean? Selecting the parents without subcats' kind of defeats the purpose.

Then it is me who is a bit confused. Can you try and explain what it is you're trying to accomplish, exactly?

    Sure. Thanks for your attention.

Below is a screenshot of my LR settings for my products categories:

Below is a screen shot of the LR products for reordering:

This long list is the result of entries added to the subcategories of the GL&V (#2) products. However, I only want my clients to be able to reorder the top 11 of these i.e. the parents. I'm also outputting this code for a dynamic menu.

Ah right. This probably has to do with the Auto-Assign Category Parents in your global channel preferences. That means if an entry is put in a child category, it is also put in its parent categories, thus showing in the list. You might want to try and disable that feature. If you do, I think you'll need to re-save the entries to set the categories straight again.

Aha - fixed. Re-saving of all the entries was required (tedious). I was aware of this EE setting but did not connect the dots with LR. Will log for future reference. This also means I can set some additional parts of the same product category to allow my client to reorder some products I've currently got hardcoded. Awesome! Thanks Low.
