Is there any way to get Low Search to search through discussions from the ExpressionEngine Discussion Forum add-on?

   There is not at this point.

   I haven't found anything in the docs to think that this has changed, but have a client requesting so I told them I'd double check.
   
   Is the forum still impenetrable as far as Low Search results is concerned?

   Yes. Low Search can only (and will only) search and return Channel Entries.
