Select option for 'all'

I have select menus in my search form to limit the results to categories. But how can I search in all categories now? I tried an option field with all my category_ids comma separated and pipe separated. But both didn't work. How can I solve this?

   Hi Phil,
   
   You can use an option field with an empty value to search in all categories.
