Auto Break text formatting for textarea variable type?

Is there any way to set different text formatting for the textarea variable type? Something similar to the text formatting options we have for EE field types.

Specifically I would like to create a text area that uses the "Auto
" text formatting. So all paragraph returns are automatically converted to a break tag.

   Hi Bryan,
   
   You can already do this with a Textarea type and the format="" parameter, using the Parse tag:
   
   

   {exp:low_variables:parse var="my_var" format="xhtml"}
